Tune into The Daily Drum with host Harold Fisher tonight at 7:00 PM on WHUR (96.3 FM) as Councilmember Yvette M. Alexander will be a guest. Councilmember Alexander will be discussing how Ward 7 is affected by Walmart’s abrupt decision to close 269 stores globally. She will be joined by Councilmember Vincent Orange (At-Large).
Walmart’s decision affects the construction of Capitol Gateway Marketplace and the Skyland Town Center, where Walmart was slated to be the anchor retail. In response to the decision, Councilmember Alexander released the following statement:
“I am angry, and I take this personally as I advocated to bring them to Ward 7. The District had a deal with Walmart to bring in five stores with two coming to Ward 7. They signed leases, and now they have broken their deal,” says Councilmember Alexander. “This has racial and social-economic discrimination implications. This is a major setback, but I am confident that the District will do everything possible to move forward with the projects.
