It was another successful year for Councilmember Alexander’s turkey giveaway as nearly 2,000 Ward 7 residents received a turkey for Thanksgiving. The annual event took place at the Deanwood Recreation Center on Tuesday, November 24. Each year various organizations join Councilmember Alexander and contribute donations of turkeys to be distributed.
This year, American Third Pillar Charities in partnership with Islamic Relief, USA made a huge contribution in not only donating turkeys. The organizations provided supplies of non-perishable side items, which included canned goods and more. Other organizations that contributed to this year’s give away included Contemporary Family Services, MBI Health Services, Hard Light Consulting Group, and The Meyers Group, LLC. Former Washington Redskins Wide Receiver and H.D. Woodson alum Joshua Morgan served as a volunteer.
Each year the number of families who receive a turkey increases as a unique factor contributes to the growth of the event. Ward 7 residents are familiar with the event and will call the Office of Councilmember Alexander as early as September. Once the list to reserve a turkey is open, residents share the information with their neighbors, friends, and relatives in the ward. From Deanwood to Benning Heights, Marshall Heights, Kenilworth and more, by word-of-mouth, the turkey giveaway has helped families across the ward.
“Each year that I have done this, I see families that may face hardships and preparing a Thanksgiving meal for loved ones is a task, especially if there is a financial strain. I love doing my part in helping to ease the burden that may come for families who need help during this time of year,” says Councilmember Alexander. “I thank everyone involved in this year’s giveaway. Everyone made someone’s day a bit brighter.”
